Kamiwaza has a wide variety of handmade wooden lures in different styles and sizes, mainly focusing on catching pelagic species from the rocky shores of Japan. The DecoPop Super Slim is a popper made to be easy to cast far which translates well to all styles of fishing including the offshore style of tuna fishing we have here, and I’ve found these to be very effective.
Despite the smaller cup they have enough action to bring up deeper fish like traditional poppers but they also have the ability to be worked in a more technical style like stickbaits. You can sweep them under the water which causes the splash and continue cranking to keep the lure submerged and swimming under the water, this can help entice more aggressive species like yellowfin and yellowtail. The 190F size weighs 60g but when you add the appropriate Owner ST-66 3/0 trebles they get closer to 74g which makes them usable on a variety of setups including the traditional spinning rods rated for PE3 to PE8 and even large low profile reels on long conventional rods.Â
These lures are surprisingly durable due to their wood construction and thick paint coat, barely showing any wear after landing 6 yellowfin on my last 8-day trip. They’re made in one of the premier factories in Japan whose house brand lures often retail for over $200.Â
